Furman Captures First Road Win, Blitzes USC Upstate, 80-59

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Cierra Carter scored 17 points and claimed 11 rebounds to lead a parade of five double figure scorers as Furman blitzed USC Upstate, 80-59, in women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the G.B. Hodge Center.

Carter, a 5-foot-11 senior All-Southern Conference forward, paced a solid shooting effort by Furman (6-2), connecting on 6-of-11 shots, including 3-of-6 3-pointers, in leading the Paladins to their first road victory of the season in three outings.

Le'Jzae Davidson followed with 14 points, Stephania Oramas with 12, and DeAnneisha Jackson and Celena Taborn rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points apiece.

Furman, which led from start to finish, connected on 30-of-57 shots to finish at 52.6 percent from the field. The Paladins also canned 8-of-19 treys in overwhelming USC Upstate (2-7) and claiming their fourth straight win and eighth victory in the last nine meetings with the Spartans.

Tamera Thorpe's 16 points led USC Upstate, which committed 19 turnovers that led to 27 Furman points.

"I was proud of our response today after a tough loss at Georgia on Thursday," said head coach Jackie Carson following the game.  "The positive we took away from that game (Georgia) was how valuable it is to start out strong and execute our game plan, and we did that today.  We moved the ball well and had the best tempo today we've had all year.  Our defensive effort was also there.  Everybody was locked in."

Three-pointers by Davidson and Oramas over the game's first three minutes helped give the Paladins an 8-0 lead, and Carter followed with a trey and a basket to stretch the advantage to 13-2.

The Paladins, who led 23-12 after the first quarter and 38-27 at halftime, used a 10-0 run out of the break to take total command, a Davidson 3-pointer at the 5:39 mark of the third period capping the spurt for a 48-27 advantage.

Furman also dominated the boards, posting a 42-20 advantage on the strength of Carter's 11 caroms, which gave the Columbia, S.C., product her second double-double of the season.

Oramas combined her 12 points with a career high eight rebounds and seven assists — her fourth seven-assist performance in eight game this year.

Furman plays host to Bob Jones on Tuesday in a 5:00 p.m. contest at Timmons Arena that is part of hoops doubleheader.
