Furman Downs College of Charleston In Season Opener, 72-58

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Le'Jzae Davidson scored 19 points and DeAnneisha Jackson contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds to power Furman past College of Charleston, 72-58, in the Paladins' season opener Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

The Paladins led from wire to wire and used a late 10-0 fourth quarter run to secure the game's outcome in the first of three  home games to open the campaign.

Furman will play host to Davidson on Wednesday in a 7:00 p.m. game.

Davidson, a 5-foot-5 guard from Nashville, Tenn., coming off an SoCon All-Freshman Team season a year ago that saw her average 10.9 points per game, connected on 7-of-18 shots, including three 3-pointer, and two free throws for her team high scoring tally.

Jackson's 13 points and 11 rebounds, which gave the 6-foot-2 senior forward her fifth double-double as a Paladin, keyed Furman to a 44-33 rebounding advantage, which was aided by 6-foot-3 freshman Celena Taborn, who contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks over 22 minutes in her collegiate debut.

Cierra Carter's buzzer beating 16-foot jump shot gave Furman a 19-16 lead after one period, and the Paladins led 37-29 at intermission. 

Furman enjoyed a 57-47 advantage after three periods and scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter to go up 61-47 on a Kaitlyn Duncan layup.

The College of Charleston answered with an 8-0 run to slice Furman's margin to six points with 5:46 to go, but a Stephania Ormas 3-point play highlighted a 10-0 spurt that Davidson ended with her third 3-pointer of the contest to give the Paladins a 71-55 lead with just under three minutes remaining.

The Cougars got a game high 21-point performance from Darien Huff.

Furman shot 45.2 percent from the field, making 28-of-62 attempts.  The College of Charleston connected on 23-of-63 shots (36.5%).
