GREENVILLE, S.C. - Watson George of Memphis University School signed a National Letter of Intent to play men's tennis at Furman beginning next fall. He is the first signee for the 2008-09 season for head coach Paul Scarpa.

"We are so pleased to have another outstanding player from the Memphis University school become a Paladin with two of his former teammates," commented head coach Scarpa. "Watson brings the same winning tradition combined with excellent coaching and academics from his school. We are happy that he has chosen Furman and given our coaching staff a chance to help develop him as a player and person."

George played in the no. 1 spot for Memphis University School, and was the state champion in doubles in 2006. He also won the Tennessee State USTA qualifier in 2007 and was a Southern Open doubles semifinalist in 2007. Tennisrecruiting.net touts George as a four-star recruit, and he currently ranks fourth in the state of Tennessee and holds a national ranking of 205.

George will become the third current Paladin from the Memphis University School in Tennessee, joining junior Bo Ladyman and freshman Sawyer Duncan on the roster for 2007-08.
