ATHENS, GA -- The Furman men's tennis team competed this weekend at the 42nd annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. The tournament is the oldest fall college tennis tournament in America.
In singles action, Paladin senior Chris Motes defeated South Florida's Juan Carlos Acuna 7-6(8), 7-6(4), before falling to 15th-ranked Matteo Fago of Tennessee 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of competition. Charlie Jones of Vanderbilt defeated Furman senior Jordan Walters 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, Walters and senior Robert Bruner defeated Eric Moran and Dane Halaj of Stetson 8-3, then beat Michael Browder and Zac Dunkle of Samford 8-6 in the second round of the tournament. The remaining rounds of doubles matches were cancelled due to inclement weather. Also in doubles, Motes and senior Chris Rhyne were defeated 8-6 by Ricky Doverspike and Michael Thompson of Alabama.
