Furman's Andy Juc Selected to Compete in NCAA Singles Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. - Furman men's tennis player Andy Juc has been selected to the field of 64 singles players that will compete in the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships, the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee announced today. The competition will be conducted May 23-28 at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championship.

Juc, a sophomore from Chisinau, Moldova, earned automatic qualification into the singles championship as the lone Southern Conference player to rank in the ITA Top 125 for singles. Currently ranked 74th in the ITA FILA Collegiate Rankings, Juc is the youngest Furman player ever to earn a spot in the NCAA field of 64 and the first Paladin since John Chesworth in 2002. He is only the eighth Furman player to compete in the individual championships.

"To be chosen in the select field of 64 is special," said Furman head coach Paul Scarpa, "To be a feared participant with an 18-7 record in significant. Andy's success shows that our program continues to develop national caliber players. We celebrate his success and past Furman players who were chosen to play in this special event. I can see Andy making an impact in this event."

A first-team all-conference honoree in singles, Juc posted an 18-7 record this season, including an 8-1 mark in the league. He closed out the season on a six-match winning streak, earning straight-set wins in both of his matches in the SoCon Tournament. During the season, Juc recorded victories against opponents from #32 Tennessee, #40 Vanderbilt, #45 Georgia Tech, #51 Elon and #57 College of Charleston. Juc also paired with teammate Scott Kahler to win ten of his last 11 doubles matches en route to a 20-6 overall record. The tandem earned second-team all-conference honors.

The last Furman individual to win a singles match in the NCAA Tournament was Ned Caswell who advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1987 competition. The draws for this year's tournament will be determined following the team competition, which ends on May 22.
