The Furman men's tennis team had several players compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend, with senior Mike Kociecki leading the way.
In the first round, Kociecki defeated Alex Lambropoulos of Kentucky 6-3, 6-2. However, he fell in a close match to Chris Motes of UGA in the round of sixteen, 7-6 (8), 6-2.
Junior Jason Basile also competed for the Paladins, dropping his first match to Chris Nowak of MTSU 7-5, 6-1. In the consolation round, Basile lost to Nick Maurillo of Auburn 6-4, 6-1.
Freshman Sawyer Duncan competed in his first tournament for the Paladins, falling to Drake Bernstein of UGA 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2. In the consolation round, Duncan was defeated by Emmanuel Nkoueleue (Georgia Southern) 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles action, the team of Basile/Duncan was defeated in the first round by Nowak/Wishing (MTSU) 8-2, but performed well in the consolation bracket, winning two of their three matches. Basile/Duncan defeated Gvelesiani/Kenny (Georgia Tech), then defeated Maurillo/Mills (Auburn) 9-8, before falling to Machuca/Machuca (Southern Miss) 8-5.
The Furman men's tennis team returns to action next weekend at the Jim Causey Invitational in Davidson, N.C.
