Men's Tennis Slips By Yale, 4-3

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- With the score tied 3-3, Paladin freshman Carl Lundberg recorded a win at number three singles to lead the Furman men's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Yale Monday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

Yale swept the doubles matches to take the doubles point, with Joel Samaha and Erik Blumenkranz defeating seniors Chris Motes and Chris Rhyne 8-3 at number one doubles. Calvin Bennett and Marc Powers teamed up for an 8-4 win over junior Sawyer Duncan and freshman Andrew Mellow at number two doubles, while Connor Dawson and John Huang posted an 8-3 victory over junior Andrei Chvetsov and freshman Carl Lundberg in the third doubles match.

In singles action, Furman's Motes defeated Huang 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 at number two singles, while Mellow recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win over Daniel Hoffman at number four singles. Paladin freshman Tyler Droll beat Samaha 6-3, 7-6 in the sixth singles match.

Yale recorded two singles wins to tie the match at three apiece. Powers posted a 7-6(1), 6-3 win over Duncan in the number one singles match, and Dawson defeated Chvetsov 6-3, 6-0 at number five singles to set up Lundberg's match-clinching battle. Lundberg then defeated Bennett 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 at number three singles to seal the victory for the Paladins.

"I'm really proud of the way the guys fought back in singles," said Furman head coach Paul Scarpa. "We have had some key players out with sickness and injury over our last few matches, and we hope to be fully recovered for the Blue Gray Tournament later this week."

Furman (5-6, 2-0 SoCon) will play at the Blue Gray National Classic beginning Thursday in Montgomery, Ala.
