March 9, 2007

Atlanta, Ga. - The Furman men's tennis team won another 4-3 match in thrilling fashion, defeating No. 45 Georgia Tech with a three-set victory by sophomore Andy Juc at the top singles position. Furman (6-7) posted its second win of the season over a top 50 opponent, and its first over the Yellow Jackets since 1993. Georgia Tech, who was coming off back-to-back wins over No. 10 Florida State and No. 20 Clemson, fell to 5-6 on the season.

"Our guys just played very well," said Furman head coach Paul Scarpa, "They continued to fight and I really couldn't have asked any more of them. Georgia Tech is a very good team and the match could have gone either way."

The Paladins earned the critical doubles point with 8-6 wins at number one and three. Juc and partner Scott Kahler won their sixth consecutive match, defeating Jordan DeLass and George Gvelesiani at flight three. At the top position, Bo Ladyman and Brian Crook improved to 6-4 this spring with their win over Eric Molnar and Luke Rassow-Kantor.

In singles action, Georgia Tech evened the score with Scott Blackmon's 6-4, 6-1 over Jordan Walters at number six. Furman came right back as Ladyman posted an impressive 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 victory over DeLass at position two. Furman took a 3-1 advantage in the match with Chris Gilli's 7-6, 7-5 win over Rassow-Kantor at number five. Yellow Jacket wins at flight three and four knotted the overall score at three and put the pressure on the number one dual match. After losing the opening set 6-4, Juc battled back for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over Jose Muguruza to give the Paladins the win.

Furman will have its hands full on Sunday as it opens Southern Conference play against No. 51 Elon at Mickel Tennis Center at 1 p.m. Elon was the lone conference opponent to beat the Paladins last season.
