GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman's Ivan Mitric has been named the Southern Conference men's tennis player of the week for all matches played Feb. 12-18, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Mitric, a sophomore from Toronto, Ontario, picked up two wins in the top flight in both singles and doubles last week. He is 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Furman sits at 6-3 overall and 1-0 in league matches. The Paladins defeated The Citadel and Davidson on the road, both by a 6-1 score, over the weekend.
In singles play, Mitric kicked off SoCon play with a 6-4, 7-5 win against The Citadel's Roy Hobson on Feb. 16 at flight No. 1. The next day, Mitric, who ranks No. 117 nationally, earned another win in the top spot, this time downing Davidson's Axel Fries, 6-2, 7-6.
In doubles action, Mitric and his partner, Jake Munns, went 2-0 at No. 1. The duo defeated The Citadel's Willem van Zyl and Gavin Stewart, 6-2, to move to 1-0 in conference play before topping Davidson's Fries and Yash Parikh, 6-3, on Sunday.
Furman plays host to Appalachian State on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Mickel Tennis Center.
Also nominated: Frazier Rengifo (ETSU), Nico Grewe (UNCG), Sami Kirberg (Samford) and Kerim Hyatt (Chattanooga).
