ATLANTA, GA. -- Junior Jake Bhangdia outlasted Vincent Sterkens, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, at flight three, leading Furman past Belmont, 4-3, in men's tennis action Saturday at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, Tenn.
The Bruins jumped out to an early lead, taking the top two doubles matches to claim the opening point. Marko Ilic and Hendric Inno defeated Bhangdia and junior Jake Munns, 6-4, at flight one, and Joan Valy and Jake Briggs posted a 6-2 advantage versus sophomore Ivan Mitric and rookie James Roelofse, 6-2, at flight two. The flight three match was unfinished with the teams tied at 5-5.
Belmont grabbed the top two singles points. Ilic held off Mitric, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, in the top-seeded contest, and Inno topped junior Clarke Wilson, 6-2, 6-4, at number two.
The Paladins claimed the bottom four singles matches for the victory. Munns blanked Valy, 6-0, 6-0, at number three, and sophomore Drew Singerman beat Adam Rudowski, 6-1, 6-0, at flight five. Sophomore Henrik Atlevi recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory versus Briggs at flight six, and Bhangdia clinched the match at flight four.
Furman (2-3) will entertain USC Upstate and North Greenville on Feb. 9 at the Mickel Tennis Center. First serve versus the Spartans is set for 11 a.m.
