GREENVILLE, S.C. -- On Tuesday, the Furman men's tennis team will entertain South Carolina State at 3 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in the Paladins' 2019 spring opener.
Over the years, Furman has been very successful on its home court. Over the past 16 seasons the Paladins have lost only 30 matches on their home court, posting an impressive record of 128-30 since 2002.
Tuesday's match marks just the second between Furman and South Carolina State. The Paladins defeated the Bulldogs, 6-1, in Orangeburg in 2009, in the teams' only other meeting. The Bulldogs come to Greenville at 0-2 after losing to Temple, 6-1, on Saturday then dropping a 5-2 decision at Old Dominion on Sunday.
The Paladins return seven players from last season's team that posted a 19-8 overall record and a 5-2 mark in Southern Conference play. Furman head coach Kelly Jones guided the team to the finals of the league tournament in 2018 for the fourth time in five years.
Furman's Ivan Mitric was honored as the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year in 2018, while senior Jake Munns earned an all-conference first team citation for doubles. Mitric was also named to the 2018 SoCon All-Freshman Team.
