GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head men's tennis coach Kelly Jones announced today the team's schedule for the 2019 season.
The Paladins will open the season January 22 when Furman plays host to S.C. State at the Mickel Tennis Center. Following a second home contest versus Charlotte on January 25, the Paladins hit the road, playing at Georgia Tech to end January, then opening February with a trip to Nashville to square off against Lipscomb and Belmont. Furman will entertain USC Upstate and North Greenville on February 9 before opening the Southern Conference season at The Citadel on Feb. 16. The Paladins continue the road swing with a match at Davidson on Feb. 17 then end the month with a Feb. 23 contest versus Appalachian State in Greenville.
Furman begins March action with a home contest against Georgia Southern, then the Paladin will travel to Orlando to play Valparaiso in a neutral match over the team's spring break. The conference schedule is in full swing in March, as Furman plays host to UNC Greensboro on March 16 before traveling to Wofford, East Tennessee State, and Chattanooga. A match at the College of Charleston on March 31 breaks up league play, before the Paladins return to the Mickel Tennis Center to conclude the conference regular season.
Furman will play host to Samford on April 6 then honor senior Alex Steryous in his final home match on April 8, when the Paladins square off against SoCon rival Mercer. The team concludes the regular seaon April 12-13 when Furman plays at Richmond and Norfolk State. The Southern Conference Tournament is slated for April 18-20 in Macon, Ga.
The Paladins return seven players from last season's team that posted a 19-8 overall record and a 5-2 mark in Southern Conference play. Jones guided the team to the finals of the league tournament in 2018 for the fourth time in five years.
Furman's Ivan Mitric was honored as the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year in 2018, while Munns earned an all-conference first team citation for doubles. Mitric was also named to the 2018 SoCon All-Freshman Team.
