GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's tennis team will open the 2018 spring campaign this weekend at the FSU Spring Invitational at the Florida State indoor tennis facility in Tallahassee, Fla. The Paladins will take on Florida Atlantic at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the first round of the tournament.
The winner of the Furman/Florida Atlantic match will square off versus the winner of the Florida A&M/North Florida victor Saturday at 4:30 p.m., while the losers of both matches will play Sunday at 8 a.m.
Other teams participating in the FSU Spring Invitational include host Florida State, Louisiana, Georgia State, and Mercer.
Saturday's match marks the fourth meeting between the Paladins and the Owls. The teams last met in 2001, when Florida Atlantic defeated Furman, 4-0, to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
Furman returns seven players from last season's team that posted a 17-8 overall record and a 6-1 mark in Southern Conference play. Head coach Kelly Jones guided the team to the semifinals of the league tournament in 2017.
Cameron Green was named to the All-Southern Conference first team for singles last spring, while Jake Munns represented the Paladins on the All-SoCon first team for doubles. Munns was named to the All-SoCon second team at flight four singles, and Jake Bhangdia was honored with an All-SoCon second team selection at flight six singles. Munns and Clarke Wilson were named to the 2017 SoCon All-Freshman Team.
The Paladins' home opener is set for Feb. 7 versus Presbyterian. The match will begin at 3 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center. Fans can follow the Furman men's tennis team throughout the season by logging onto www.FurmanPaladins.com.
