Fifth-seeded Furman downed No. 4 UNCG 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament Friday at the College of Charleston Tennis Center in Mt. Pleasant. With the win, the Paladins advance to Saturday’s semifinals, where they will take on the College of Charleston at 8:30 a.m.

Furman junior Andrew Mellow was named to the All-Southern Conference men’s tennis first team, as announced by the league office today. Postseason balloting was conducted by the league’s head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

Former Furman men’s tennis coach Paul Scarpa is among a class of six tennis icons who will be inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s Collegiate Hall of Fame in 2012, as announced this week by the ITA.

Tom Wood defeated junior Tyler Droll, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(8-6) at number six singles to break a 3-3 tie and lead the Wofford men’s tennis team to a 4-3 win over Furman Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in the regular season finale for both teams. The Paladins honored senior Watson George in his final home match on Saturday.

The Furman men’s tennis team will conclude the 2012 regular season Saturday when the Paladins take on Wofford at 1 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center. The team will honor senior Watson George in his final home match of the season. The match the 32nd meeting between the two schools. The Paladins defeated the Terriers, 4-3, last season to take a 30-1 lead in the series.

Furman Match At Appalachian State Ruled 3-3 Tie
Following a protest by Furman head men's tennis coach Kelly Jones, the Paladins' match at Appalachian State on Thursday was officially declared a 3-3 tie. Jones protested the Mountaineers' singles line-up for the match, and a Southern Conference committee voted unanimously (4-0) to render the number six singles match a no contest, thus rendering the tie.

Former Furman men’s tennis coach Paul Scarpa is among a class of five athletic greats who was inducted into the Southern Conference Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the Diana Wortham Theater in Asheville, N.C. on Thursday evening. This is the fourth year the conference has inducted a class of former athletes, coaches and special contributors to the league’s 91-year history. In addition to Scarpa, 2012 inductees included Angie Barker (East Tennessee State), Percy Beard (Auburn), Dick Modzelewski (Maryland), and Jim Burch (Southern Conference).
