Furman Men's Soccer Sets 2005 Schedule
June 21, 2005
Four in-season tournaments, a match at upstate rival Clemson and a tough Southern Conference slate highlight the 18-match 2005 Furman men's soccer schedule announced by Paladins' head coach Doug Allison on Tuesday.
Furman will host exhibition matches versus South Carolina (Aug. 20) and Wake Forest (Aug. 27) before opening its season versus Binghamton in Coastal Carolina's tournament on September 1.
"We feel like this year's schedule will provide a big challenge for our team," said Allison. "We have a solid non-conference slate, which includes NCAA participant Ohio State, and we will have to face UNC Greensboro and the College of Charleston who both made the tournament last year from our league."
The Paladins will open the six-match 2005 home slate by hosting Mercer and Ohio State in the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational on September 9 and 11 at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium. After traveling to tournaments at Harvard and Wofford, Furman will begin SoCon play at home against the Elon Phoenix on October 1.
The Paladins will be tested on the road traveling to conference foes College of Charleston, UNC Greensboro, Davidson and Appalachian State while playing host to Elon, Georgia Southern and Wofford. Furman will wrap up its home schedule with an October 23, match against Radford.
The 2005 Southern Conference Tournament will begin on the campuses of the top fpur seeds on November 5, with the semifinals and finals being held in Charleston, S.C., November 11-13.
Furman, which opens preseason training in mid-August, returns seven starters from a 2004 squad that finished 6-10-2.
