Appalachian State Edges Furman in SoCon Tournament Opening Round Match 1-0

Boone, N.C. - Corey Lugger's second half goal lifted Appalachian State to a 1-0 victory over Furman in the opening round of the 2004 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championships Tuesday evening at Kidd-Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C.
With the win, Appalachian State advances to face the second-seeded College of Charleston Cougars in the SoCon semifinals Firday night at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C.
Lugger tallied the winner for the Mountaineers at the 66:26 mark on an assist from Carter Parrish. Lugger, just inside the box, received a cross from Parrish and rocketed a 15-yard strike past Furman goalkeeper Alex Maslow for the game-winner.
Appalachian State goalkeeper Phillip Cavicchia tallied six saves, including a finger tip deflection on a Nick LeBlanc shot late in the contest, to earn the win for the Mountaineers. Maslow tallied three stops in the loss for the Paladins.
Furman, who finishes its season at 6-10-2 overall, held a 10-9 edge in shots attempted and 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
With the victory, Appalachian State improves to 10-6-3 on the season.
