Howard's Second Half Penalty Kick Lifts Furman Over Georgia Southern, 2-1

Greenville, S.C. - Senior Jordan Howard converted from the penalty spot in the 74th minute to lift Furman over Georgia Southern 2-1 in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.

After a Paladin was taken to the ground at the top of the six-yard box at 73:49, the referee pointed to the penalty spot and Howard placed his shot into the right corner for his fourth goal of the season. The match-wining tally mark Howard's third of the season and handed Furman its third consecutive league win.

Junior Caleb Suri opened the scoring in the 38th minute bending a free kick from 26 yards into the lower left side netting to put the Paladins ahead 1-0. In the 63rd minute, Furman was whistled for a foul in the box and Georgia Southern's Danny Hall guided a penalty kick past Furman goalkeeper Alec Kann and into the left corner to knot the match at 1-1.

Both sides went down to 10 men in the 65th minute as Furman's Fabien Vorbe and Georgia Southern's Brennan Peacock were sent off. A total of 32 fouls were whistled in the match while six yellow cards were issued to go with two red cards.

Kann managed to stop eight shots, including two sliding saves at his near post in the first half, to earn the victory on goal. Mike Gubosh turned away three shots for the Eagles.

Georgia Southern held a 15-14 edge in shots and 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Furman had three corner kicks while the Eagles were awarded three.

With the win, Furman improved to 8-6-2 overall and 3-2-0 in SoCon play. Georgia Southern remained winless falling to 0-14-1 overall and 0-5-0 in the league.

 

 

Furman returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts SoCon leading Wofford in its home finale. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Stone Stadium.
