Own Goal Gives Furman Road Win Over #25 South Carolina 1-0

Columbia, S.C. - The Furman Paladin soccer team scored on an own goal at 57:37 to down #25 South Carolina 1-0 in men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Eugene Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C.

Josh Villalobos' corner kick from the right side sailed through the box and bounced off a Gamecock defender and into the net for the lone score of the night.

Paladin goalkeeper Alex Maslow totaled five saves and the Furman defense contributed two first half back saves to record the shutout of the Gamecocks. With the win, Furman improves to 2-0-1 in its last three matches with cross-state rival South Carolina.

After being outshot 12-4 in the opening 45 minutes, Furman put pressure on the South Carolina defense in the second half with each team registering 10 shots. Furman managed a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.

South Carolina keeper Brad Guzan stop eight shots in a losing effort for the Gamecocks.

Furman improves to 5-8-1 with the victory, while South Carolina falls to 9-5-1. Furman returns to Southern Conference play Saturday when it travels to Spartanburg, S.C., for a 6:00 p.m. clash with the Wofford Terriers.
