Georgia Southern Downs Furman in Double Overtime 1-0
Oct. 14, 2004
Statesboro, Ga. - Lawrence Smith's goal in the 26th second of the second overtime gave the Eagles the 1-0 victory Furman Wednesday afternoon at Eagle Field. The win snaps Georgia Southern's 10 year losing skid to the Paladins and is head coach Kevin Chambers' first ever win over Furman as a coach or a player.
With the win, the Eagles are now 5-4-2 on the year, and are 2-2 in SoCon play, while Furman drops to 4-6-1 and 1-3 in the SoCon.
Just seconds into the second overtime, Smith found the ball and dribbled it down the right side of the field past several Paladin defenders before slipping the ball past Furman's Alex Maslow for the win.
Tommy Irwin registered seven shots on the day, four on goal, while Smith added two. For Furman, Josh Villalobos tallied seven shots and three on goal.
Georgia Southern's Brian Young and Adam Webb combined for five saves on the afternoon, while Furman's Maslow stopped seven shots.
The Eagles will return to Eagle Field this Sunday, October 17 as they face intra-state rival Georgia State at 1:00 p.m. Furman returns to action on October 20, when they host Davidson at 7:00 p.m.
