Harvard Holds Off Furman 1-0 In Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational Finale

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Harvard's Charles Altchek scored the match's lone goal in the 33rd minute to help the Crimson slip past Furman 1-0 in men's soccer action Sunday afternnon at the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational at Stone Soccer Stadium. Coastal Carolina exploded for six goals, four in the second half, to down Louisville 6-2 in the day's opening match.
Furman goalkeeper Alex Maslow made to one-versus-one saves, but was unable to turn away Altchek on a breakaway at 32:22. Altchek dribbled past the Furman defense on the right side and slotted a shot by Maslow to improve the Crimson to 1-2-0 on the season.
A match that included eight yellow cards, four for each team, saw Harvard outshoot the Paladins 14-7. Furman held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks while fouls were even at 23 each. Ryan Johnson recorded the shutout in goal for Harvard collecting three saves. Maslow posted five save in a losing effort.
In Sunday's opening match, Coastal Carolina's Mubarike Chisoni tallied three goals and an assist while Jordie Hughes contributed two goals and an assist to lead the Chanticleers to a 6-2 victory over Louisville.
The Cardinals' Ryan Meyer out his team ahead just 2:20 into the match off of a corner kick from David Guzman, but Chisoni found net 59 seconds later to even the match. After Jelani Grant scored on a free kick to tie the match at 2-2 in the 49th minute, Hughes responded with with a goal in the 70th minute to to push the Chanticleers out in front once again.
Over the final 15 minutes Coastal Carolina put the game out of reach with three more goals to cruise to a 6-2 victory and improve to 4-0-0 on the season. Louisville falls to 2-2-1.
Furman, 0-3-1, returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Garner-Webb at 7:00 p.m.
