Furman (12-6-1) earned its spot in Sunday's final with a 2-1, overtime triumph over host ETSU on Friday night. The Paladins took a 1-0 lead on Miles Fenton's second goal of the season early in the second half before the Bucs equalized from the penalty spot. In the 98th minute, senior Laurence Wyke headed in a Rocky Guerra corner kick to secure the Paladins' third trip to the league finals in the last five seasons.
UNCG (8-8-2) netted a first half goal on Friday afternoon at held on late to topple No. 1 seed Mercer, 1-0, in the first semifinal round match of the day. The Spartans, who claimed a 1-0 win over Furman in the regular season finale in Greensboro, N.C., two weeks ago, have won three straight matched and four of their last five.
The Spartans hold a 19-15-4 series lead versus the Paladins and have eliminated Furman from the SoCon Tournament in each of the past two seasons. Furman, however, has posted a 5-1-0 record against UNCG in six previous SoCon Championship finals. The Paladins claimed the 2015 title at Summers-Taylor Stadium with a 1-0 victory over ETSU.
