Baker, Wyke Lead Furman Soccer Past VMI, 5-0

Lexington, Va. -- Josiah Baker and Laurence Wyke netted two goals apiece to power Furman to a 5-0 victory over VMI in Southern Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field in Lexington, Va.

The shutout improved the Paladins to 8-4-2 overall and 2-2-2 in league play, while VMI fell to 0-11-2 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Furman dominated from start to finish with a 33-1 advantage in total shots and 19-0 margin in shots on target. Baker, a junior from Lawrenceville, Ga., put the Paladins in front just 4:57 into the match when he pounced on a rebound off of Rocky Guerra's shot for a tap-in. In the 32nd minute, Wyke netted the first of his two goals on the day with a score from 12 yards out off of Danny Kierath's free kick.

The Paladins put the match away with a pair of goals just 1:30 apart in the first eight minutes of the second half. Aigbekan Nosegbe got on the end of a Baker cross and fired his shot into the upper left-hand corner for his first tally of the season at 51:02. Ninety seconds later, Wyke redirected Baker's shot past a stranded VMI goalkeeper to up the margin to 4-0 at the 52:32 mark.

Baker capped the scoring by tucking away a Kierath cross into the lower right-hand corner with 55 seconds remaining in regulation for the final 5-0 score line.

Kierath and Baker each recorded two assists in the victory. Senior Jonathan Smith picked up the shutout in goal for the Paladins, while Robert Allen recorded 14 saves in a losing effort for the Keydets.
