Greensboro, N.C. -- UNCG netted a pair of first half goals against a 10-man Furman squad en route to a 2-0 victory over the 18th-ranked Paladins in Southern Conference men's soccer action on Saturday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Less than four minutes into the match, the Spartans slipped behind the Furman defense on a counter attack. Paladin defender Zach Jackson dove in front of a goalbound shot with his arms to his side to redirect the scoring chance wide of the left post, but was issued a red card and UNCG awarded a penalty kick after the shot struck his right shoulder. The Spartans' Leeroy Maguraushe converted from the spot to give UNCG a 1-0 lead.

In the 25th minute, Faisal Almubaslat received a low cross from the left wing, split two defenders and touched a shot through the keepers legs to double the Spartan lead.

Furman earned eight corner kicks and matched UNCG with nine total shots and four shots on goal, but the shorthanded Paladins were unable to find the back of the net as the Spartans notched their fifth straight shutout to improve to 4-4-2 and 1-0-1 in the SoCon. Furman fell to 7-3-0 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Jon Milligan recorded three saves to earn the shutout for UNCG and a Spartan defender made a crucial save off the goal line on a second half effort from Furman's Laurence Wyke to preserve the clean sheet. The Paladins' Ben Hale recorded two saves in a losing effort.

Furman continues SoCon play on Tuesday when it hosts the Mercer Bears in a 7 p.m. match on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium. Tickets for Tuesday's match are $5 and can be purchased at FurmanPaladins.com or at the Stone Stadium gate beginning one hour prior to kickoff.
