Greenville, S.C. -- Senior Kevin Edelmann netted two goals and 18th-ranked Furman scored three times in the first half en route to a 4-0 victory over VMI in the Southern Conference opener for both teams Tuesday evening  on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

With the victory, its 31st straight win over the Keydets, Furman improved to 7-2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play. VMI dropped to 0-6-2 overall and 0-1 in the SoCon.

"It's great to open Southern Conference play with a victory and great to get playing time for so many guys," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison, who used 21 players in the win. "We appreciate everyone for coming out and giving us a great crowd and outstanding home field advantage in the conference opener."

Edelmann, a native of Koblenz, Germany, put the Paladins in front at 16:25. Danny Kierath served a corner kick from the right side to the back post and Edelmann's header bounced across the goal line to give Furman a 1-0 lead.

Less than four minutes later, Connor Hubbard got loose in the box on the right side and sent a low cross to Emery May at the far side of the six-yard box. He centered a pass to Josiah Baker who poked a shot past VMI goalkeeper Robert Allen from close range to double the margin at 19:49.

With under five minutes remaining before halftime, Drew Mostoller upped the Paladin lead to 3-0 with his first collegiate goal. Laurence Wyke found space on the left side of the box and fired a shot that rebounded to Mostoller. The Trinity, N.C., native collected and finished from close range.

Edelmann, who has netted three goals on the season, capped the scoring at 61:50 when Baker was dragged down in the box and the center back deposited the penalty kick past Allen for his second goal of the night.

Furman finished with a 29-4 margin in total shots and 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. Ben Hale picked up the victory in goal for the Paladins, while Jonathan Smith recorded the only save on the night for the Paladin keepers. Allen stopped six shots in a losing effort.
