Greenville, S.C. -- South Carolina's Luca Mayr punched home his third goal of the season in the 50th minute to lift South Carolina to a 1-0 victory over eighth-ranked Furman in men's soccer action on Tuesday night in Columbia, S.C.

The loss dropped Furman from the ranks of the unbeaten and moved the Paladins to 6-1-0 on the season. The Gamecocks improved to 4-3-0.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Chris Ianev drilled a low cross through traffic from deep on the right wing to the top of the six-yard box and Mayr redirected a shot to the left-hand side to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead at 49:41.

Furman created few chances to score, despite controlling much of the possession over the final 40 minutes. Junior Laurence Wyke tested the goalkeeper with a long range effort early in the second half, and the Paladins produced their best chance in the final 15 minutes when Connor Hubbard chanced down a long ball over the top, won the ball from his defender and turned a shot on goal. With under three minutes left, Hubbard nodded a header towards the right corner off of a Danny Kierath cross that forced a save.

South Carolina's William Pyle stopped two shots to earn the shutout, while Furman's Ben Hale recorded one save in a losing effort.

The Gamecocks managed a 6-5 edge in total shots with each team recording two shots on target over 90 minutes.

The Paladins return home on Saturday, September 23, at 7 p.m. to host Gardner-Webb for the Gray Griffin Memorial Game. The first 100 fans in the gate will receive a Furman Soccer Scarf.
