Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Cole McLagan scored in the 12th minute and Furman's defense held Georgia Southern to a single shot on goal over 90 minutes as the Paladins claimed a 1-0 victory over the Eagles on Sunday afternoon at the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic at Patriots Point Athletics Complex.

With the victory, Furman improved to 2-0-0 on the campaign, while Georgia Southern slipped to 0-2-0.

Sophomore Conor Sloan played a cross from deep on the wing to the center of the box for McLagan and the redshirt-freshman slipped a shot past the Eagle defense and goalkeeper Robert Flott at 11:01 for his first career goal.

Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Ben Hale was forced to make just one save for the Paladins as he notched his first career shutout. Flott saved three shots in a losing effort for the Eagles.

Furman finished the match with a 7-6 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in shots on target. The Paladin defense successfully defended six Georgia Southern corner kicks to claim the victory against their former Southern Conference rival after opening play with a 3-2 win over former SoCon foe College of Charleston on Friday.

Head coach Doug Allison's squad travels to Denver, Colo., on Friday, September 1, to face 2016 NCAA semifinalist Denver. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. EDT. Furman caps its road swing at Air Force on September 3, before opening its 2017 home schedule on September 12, versus UNC Asheville on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.
