Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- Kevin Edelmann's header with 1:08 left in regulation capped Furman's rally from a 2-1 deficit as the Paladins downed host College of Charleston, 3-2, in the season opener on Friday night at the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Trailing 2-1 with under five minutes left in the second half, Danny Kierath served a free kick into the path of Conor Sloan, who headed the set piece past CofC goalkeeper Kevin Shields at 85:15 to bring the Paladins even at 2-2. With just over a minute to play, Furman earned a corner kick and Kierath once again set up a Paladin score. The midfielder curled the set piece into the box and Edelmann beat his marker to head in the go-ahead goal with 68 seconds remaining.

Redshirt-freshman Ben Hale picked up the victory in goal in his first career start, while Shields took the loss for the Cougars. CofC (0-1-0) managed an 8-7 edge in total shots, but Furman (1-0-0) held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Charleston grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third minute as Eli Dent finished his chance on a rebound following a Cougar corner kick. Connor Hubbard, a Greenville, S.C., native, pulled the Paladins even before the half with his first goal of the season at the 43:04 mark. Hubbard pounced on a rebound off of Emery May's shot and hits a low strike to beat the keeper.

Matt Nozedar put CofC within a few minutes of claiming the points at 82:22 when he ran onto a Cornell Holland pass and hammered a shot past Hale to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

Furman caps play in the Aaron Olitsky Classic on Sunday when it battles former Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern. Kickoff at Patriots Point Athletics Complex.

The Paladins open their 2017 home schedule on September 12, when they entertain UNC Asheville on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium. Tickets to all Furman home matches at $5 and can be purchased at the Stone Stadium gate beginning one hour prior to kickoff or by logging onto
