Rock Hill, S.C. -- Sophomore Conor Sloan scored in the 40th minute to propel Furman to a 1-0 victory over Winthrop in exhibition men's soccer action on Thursday afternoon in Rock Hill, S.C.

Sloan, a native of Murrells Inlet, S.C., took a pass from junior Josiah Baker and fired past the Winthrop goalkeeper just seconds short of the 40-minute mark for the lone goal of the match.

"It's always great to get a win against a quality opponent like Winthrop and finish the preseason with two shutouts," said Furman head coach Doug Allison, who guided his team to a 1-0 victory over No. 2 Wake Forest in the Paladins' first preseason contest on August 13. "We've still got a lot to work on before next Friday, but it's nice to see our guys get the result."

Redshirt-freshman Ben Hale picked up the victory in goal with a clean sheet in the first half and combined with Jonathan Smith and Max Fisher to record Furman's second shutout of the preseason.

The Paladins open the regular season in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., August 25-27. Furman will face College of Charleston in the regular season opener on the August 25 and cap tournament play versus Georgia Southern on August 27.

The 2017 home opener at Stone Soccer Stadium is set for September 12, when the Paladins play host to the UNCA Bulldogs.

Tickets for every home Furman match are $5 and are available at the Stone Stadium gate beginning an hour prior to kickoff.  Log onto for $20 season tickets (20 game vouchers).
