Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's lacrosse team opens its fifth season as an intercollegiate team on Thursday, welcoming Vermont to Paladin Stadium for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
"We're excited to open our season against the University of Vermont, an outstanding lacrosse team from the America East conference," said Furman head coach Richie Meade.
Furman finished 2017 with a 7-8 record and 6-1 mark in SoCon play. Meade was named the 2017 SoCon Coach of the Year after guiding the Paladins to its' highest single-season win total in school history and share of the SoCon regular season title. The Paladins, who return six starters including 2017 SoCon Freshman of the Year Lou Yovino, are a preseason third-place pick in voting conducted by the league's head coaches.
Seniors Reilly McDermott and Jonah Moore, high school teammates from Waxhaw, N.C., were voted as the captains of the 2018 season. McDermott, a goalkeeper, will wear jersey #10 in memory of Kip Taviano, a member of Furman's class one who passed away before arriving on campus. Taviano's #10 will be worn by one senior each season who demonstrates the hard work and character of the Paladins' fallen teammate.
Senior Ben Lipscomb will be wearing jersey #59 this season in memory of Furman lacrosse senior Jackson Roberts, who died in a car accident in January.
Vermont is a preseason third-place pick in the America East coaches poll under second-year head coach Chris Feifs. The Catamounts finished 2017 with a 5-8 overall record and 1-5 mark in America East action.
Thursday's game will be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network, with Price Atkinson and Corey Gheesling on the call. Fans can find video and live stat links on FurmanPaladins.com and can follow @FURMANMLAX on Twitter for periodic game updates.
