Sapphire, N.C. -- Furman’s Garland Ferrell carded a final round 68 to capture individual medalist honors and help Furman to a one-stroke victory over the University of Kentucky at Western Carolina’s Hummingbird Intercollegiate on Monday at the par-71 Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
The win marks Ferrell’s first collegiate victory and the first tournament win for Furman since claiming the Raines Development Group Intercollegiate at the Country Club of South Carolina during the 2007-08 season.
“This is a really great way for us to end the fall season,” said Furman coach Todd Satterfield. “Garland getting the win was great, but everyone had a hand in it and it was a lot of fun to watch.”
With the Paladins and Wildcats tied and just one golfer from each school on the course with three holes left to play, Ferrell (67-68=135) birdied the par-four No. 17 to lift Furman (282-285=567) to the victory at one-under 567 for the 36-hole event. Kentucky (279-291=570) and East Carolina (290-280=570) finished in a tie for second place with Vanderbilt and Winthrop rounding out the top five.
Ferrell, a senior from Greenville, S.C., finished two strokes ahead of Akron’s Lucas Murray (68-69=137) and three strokes in front of East Carolina’s David Watkins. Paladin senior Daniel Bowden (70-72=142) managed a 14th place finish while sophomore Matt Broome (72-71=143) carded a final round 71 to finish in a tie for 20th. Furman’s J.B. Murphy (71-72=143), playing as an individual, also garnered a 20th place finish.
