Sapphire, N.C. -- Furman’s Garland Ferrell fired an opening round 67 to take the individual lead and help Furman into second place after 18 holes at Western Carolina’s Hummingbird Intercollegiate on Monday at the par-71 Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
Even at the turn, Ferrell used a pair of eagles on the back nine to shoot four-under over the final nine holes and grab a one-stroke lead over a group of six golfers tied for second at three-under par. Fellow senior Daniel Bowden recorded a two-under par 70 to share ninth place while Matt Broome carded a 72 to share 25th place after 18 holes.
The University of Kentucky shot five-under 279 to open up a three-stroke lead over Furman (282) and seven-stroke advantage over Western Carolina, Winthrop and Akron who are tied for third place at 286.

Final round play in the 36-hole event is set for Tuesday morning. Furman’s five-man team will begin to tee-off at 10:48 a.m.
