Macon, Ga. -- Ben Goforth fired a one-under par 71 to lead Furman into a tie for sixth place with an opening round 290 Sunday morning at the first annual Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon, Ga.
Goforth carded four birdies on the front nine and eagled the par five number 12 on the par 72 layout at the Brickyard at Riverside. Freshman Zach Lee and junior Chris Gilliland each registered even par rounds to guide Furman to a two-over par first round.
Clemson shot a first round 277 to hold a one stroke lead over Georgia after 18 holes of the three-day, 54-hole event. The Bulldogs' Harris English posted a seven-under 65 to claim the individual lead by two strokes.
Second round action is slated to get underway Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.
