Paladins Place Eighth At SoCon Championships

Charleston, S.C.-- The Furman men's golf team scored its best round of the week, a nine over par 297, to finish in eighth place at the Southern Conference Championships at the par 72 Links at Stono Ferry in Charleston, S.C., Tuesday.

Chris Gilliland (76-74-71=221) led the Paladins in final round action posting a one under par 71 to finish in a tie for 13th place. Gilliland started his round with a double bogey on number 10, but recorded three birdies and 14 pars to post his best round of the three-day event.

Furman's Ben Goforth (77-73-73=223) claimed a share of 18th with a one over 73 on in the final round. Following a 77 on Sunday and 73 on Monday, Goforth notched five birdies and played two under par over his final 14 holes on Tuesday.

Georgia Southern (292-289-286=867) took team honors by 12 strokes over second place College of Charleston while Chattanooga finished 16 strokes off the pace. Western Carolina's Matt Cook (70-72-69=211) used a final round 69 to post a three round score of five under par to claim medalist honors. Georgia Southern's Bryan Jones and Drew Bowen finished second and third, respectively.
