Furman Surges To Seventh At SoCon Championships

Charleston, S.C..-- The Furman men's golf team fired a second round 298 to gain three spots and move into seventh at the Southern Conference Championships at the par 72 Links at Stono Ferry in Charleston, S.C., on Monday.

Ben Goforth paced the Paladins with a one over par 73 while Shane Birckbichler and Chris Gilliland both carded a two over 74 in round two action. Goforth (77-73=150) climbed to 21st on the strength of four birdies and a one under par 35 on the front nine. Gilliland (76-74=150) joined Goforth at 21st after sinking two birdies and recording an eagle on the par five 15th. Birckbichler (75-74=149) enters Tuesday's final round action in a tie for 18th at five over after 36 holes.

Matt Cook (70-72=142) of Western Carolina moved into first place with an even par 72 on Monday to take carry a two stroke lead into the final round. Georgia Southern took over the team lead with a one over par 289. The Eagles hold a three stroke lead over second place College of Charleston and seven stroke advantage over third place UNC Greensboro. Furman, tied for seventh with Wofford, enters Tuesday two strokes behins sixth place Elon.

Final round action is set for 8 p.m. Tuesday morning.
