The Paladin men's golf team carded a 12-over 300 to grab a share of 11th place after the opening round Friday at the 38th Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Golf Club.
Elon paced the field through 18 holes of the 54-hole event with a one-under 287 Friday morning. Justin Newton fired a four-under 68 to lead the Phoenix to a one stroke advantage over East Carolina and Charleston Southern while securing a first place tie in the individual standings with Andre Thorsen of East Carolina and Stuart Carrihill of Charleston Southern.
Danny Schmieding posted a three-over par 73 during the afternoon to guide the Paladins into a three-way tie with Marshall and defending tournament champion Maryland. Furman's Matt Hayes also carded a 73 while playing as an individual.
Second round action tees off at 8 a.m. Saturday morning with teams beginning plat at No. 1 and No. 10. Furman will tee off at No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m.
