Greenville, S.C. -- Chattanooga and Clemson each fired an opening round 289 to grab a two-stroke lead after one round at the 41st Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course on Friday. Western Carolina’s Tanner Briele posted a tournament record round of 65 to take the individual lead after 18 holes.
Briele notched seven birdies in a bogey-free round to establish a new course record on the recently renovated Furman Golf Course and build a three-stroke lead over second place Adam Black of Presbyterian who carded an opening round 68. Derek Rende fired a three-under 69 to hold third place.
The Tigers and Mocs hold a two-stroke edge on third place Western Carolina and four-stroke lead on Old Dominion after Friday’s round. Presbyterian, Samford and Mississippi rounded out the top seven with four teams tied for eighth place.
Senior Daniel Bowden opened the Furman Intercollegiate with a two-over 74 to help the Paladins to a first round 305 and share of 14th place. Junior Austin Reeves, last year’s tournament champion, posted a four-over 76. Furman’s Anthony Aloi fired a team-best 73 playing as an individual.
The second round is set for Saturday with play scheduled to begin from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees at 8:00 a.m. Final round action is slated for Sunday morning.
