Furman's Harper Fires 70 In Opening Round Of Bank Of Tennessee Intercollegiate

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- Junior Keller Harper (-2) fired an opening-round 70 to lead the Furman men's golf team Friday at the 21st Annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the par 72, 7,147 yard Blackthorn Club at The Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., Harper eagled the par-5 No. 4 and followed with a birdie on No. 5 to turn at two-under.  He added birdies on No. 10 and No. 14 to finish the round in a tie for 22nd.  Louisville's Simon Zach (-9) and Shiso Go (-9) of East Tennessee State each shot a 63, a single-round tournament record, with nine birdies to lead the field after the first day of play. 

Freshman Owen Burden (-1) paced the Paladins with five birdies on Friday.  He scored a birdie on No. 4 and notched consecutive birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 to turn at three-under before adding birdies on No. 10 and No. 14 on the back to tie for 31st with a first-round 71.

Senior Scott Purvis (+2) recorded back to back birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 then again on No. 10 and No. 11 for an opening round 74, tying for 51st, while junior Matt Lehman (+3) scored a birdie on No. 8 and two birdies on the back and is in 59th place with a 75 in Friday's first round.  Junior Connor Bruns (+4) is one shot in a tie for 60th after tallying an opening round 76 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 14.

Host East Tennessee State (-18) surged into the lead with a 270 in round one.  Kent State (-12) is five strokes back in second place, just one shot ahead of Louisville (-11) and Tennessee (-11), who are tied for third.  Missouri (-7) completes the top five.  The Paladins (+2) are in 12th place after round one.

Furman will tee off of No. 10 beginning at 9:40 a.m. on Saturday in the second round of the 54-hole tournament and will play in a group with Virginia and Virginia Tech.  Admission is free and fans are welcome.  Results and live tournament scoring are available via and
