CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Junior Keller Harper (E) fired a second-round 69 to pace the Furman men's golf team Monday at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par 72, 7,071 yard Cedar Rapids Country Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Harper played virtually flawless golf on Monday, scoring four birdies, including three on the front nine, and just one bogey to finish the day in a tie for 22nd place, eight strokes back of leader Julien Sale (-8) of Arkansas State, who surged into the lead after carding a 67 on Monday. His two-day total of 69-67=136 gives him a three-stroke advantage heading into Tuesday's final round.
Freshman Owen Burden (+2) and senior Garrison Hogan (+2) moved up into a tie for 32nd after Monday's round. The Paladin duo each recorded five birdies for an even 72 in the round. Hogan scored birdies on the last four holes before the turn, while Burden added consecutive birdies on No. 17 and No. 18. Senior Connor Bruns (+4) carded a 77 with birdies on No. 6 and No. 16 to tie for 47th after two rounds, while junior Matt Lehman recorded an 81 and is tied for 74th entering the final round of play.
Arkansas State (-23) led the field for the second day in a row, tallying a 276 to take a 12-stroke lead over second-place Iowa (-11). Campbell (-4) is in third place, followed by San Jose State (-3) and Jacksonville (-3) in a tie for fourth. The Paladins (+6) dropped one spot to ninth after the second round.
The tournament will conclude with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start on Tuesday. Furman will tee off of holes No. 9 through No. 9 and will play in a group with UCLA and Southern Illinois.
