SALEM, S.C. -- Sophomore Keller Harper (E) is tied for sixth to lead the Furman men's golf team following two rounds of play Friday at the Clemson Invitational at the par 72, 7,103 yard Cliffs at Keowee Falls Golf Course in Salem, S.C.
Harper, who hails from Atlanta, Ga., carded a 73 with three birdies, including back to back birdies on No. 17 and No. 18, in the opening round then added a 71 with a team-high five birdies in Friday's second round. He enters the final round seven strokes behind Boston College's Matt Naumec (-7), who leads the field at 72-65=137.
Senior Hunter Nicholas (+6) and sophomore Scott Purvis (+6) are tied for 37th. Nichols scored a 78 with a birdie on No. 6 in the morning round then eagled the par-5 No. 18 and added three additional birdies for a 74 in the afternoon. Purvis recorded a 78 with three birdies in round one and tallied a 75 with three birdies in round two.
Junior Connor Bruns (+10) is tied for 44th entering Saturday's final round. He notched a 77 in each round on Friday, with three birdies in Friday's opening round and four birdies in round two. Sophomore Matt Lehman (+12) carded a 77 with two birdies in round one and a 79 with a birdie on No. 17 in Friday's second round.
Boston College (-7) holds a one-stroke lead over Notre Dame (-6) after two rounds of play. No. 15 Clemson (+1) sits in third, followed by SMU (+12) in fourth, and UConn (+17) in fifth. UNC Wilmington (+23) is in sixth place, followed by the Paladins (+26) in seventh.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Saturday. Furman will tee off of No. 10 beginning at 9:50 a.m. and will play in a group with George Mason and Wofford. Admission is free and fans are welcome. Results and live tournament scoring are available via www.FurmanPaladins.com and www.golfstat.com.
