Paladins Tied For Seventh In Opening Day Of Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Sophomore Scott Purvis (E) carded an opening round 72 to tie for 21st place to lead the Furman men's golf team in the first round of the 49th Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.

Purvis, a native of Mason, Ohio, eagled the par-5 No. 15 and added birdies on No. 6 and No. 8 to finish the round at even par, six strokes back of North Florida's Phillip Knowles (-6), who leads the field after firing a 66 on Friday.

Junior Connor Bruns (+2) and sophomore Garrison Hogan (+2) are tied for 41st after scoring a 74 in the first round.  Bruns notched four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 15 and No. 16, and Hogan recorded three birdies on Friday.  Sophomore Keller Harper (+3) carded a 75 with birdies on No. 9 and No. 18, tying for 48th, and sophomore Jake Reilly (+6) is tied for 83rd after scoring an opening-round 78 with a birdie on No. 6. 

Senior Hunter Nichols (-1) and sophomore Stephen Reynolds (-1) were the Paladins' top individuals, tying for 10th.  The Paladin duo each tallied a one-under 71, and Nichols paced Furman with a team-high six birdies.  Reynolds added four birdies, including three birdies in four holes from No. 15 through No. 18.

Furman had four additional individuals in the field.  Junior Clayte Hubbard (+1) is tied for 32nd after carding an opening round 71 with four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6, and sophomore Matt Lehman (+2) scored a 74 with four birdies to tie for 41st.  Junior Adam Garrett (+4) recorded a 76 with birdies on No. 12 and No. 16 to tie for 61st, and junior Raj Ghosh (+9) scored an 81 to finish the day tied for 112th.

No. 28 North Florida (-10) holds a five-stroke lead over USC Aiken (-5), and Yale (E) is in third place.  Virginia Tech (+1) sits in fourth, followed by West Virginia (+2) in fifth.

Furman will tee off of No. 1 on Saturday in the second round of the 54-hole tournament.  The Paladin individuals will begin at 8:40 a.m., followed by the team beginning at 9:20 a.m.  Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome.  Results and live tournament scoring are available via and
