Bruns Ties For Eighth At Hayt Invitational

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. -- Junior Connor Bruns (-3) carded a final-round 70 to tie for eighth place Monday to lead the Furman men's golf team at the John Hayt Invitational at the par 72, 6,966 yard Sawgrass Golf Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Bruns, who hails from Duncan, S.C., notched a team-high five birdies in the tournament's final round, including consecutive birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 then again on No. 14 and No. 15.  He finished six strokes back of individual medalist Brian Carlson (-9) of Purdue, who recorded rounds of 67-70-70=207 for the win.

Sophomores Keller Harper (+5) and Scott Purvis (+9) each added a 74 in Monday's round.  Harper birdied No. 11 and No. 18 to tie for 35th, while Purvis made back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and 18 for a 55th-place finish.

Sophomore Matt Lehman (+9) tied for 75th after scoring a 78 with birdies on No. 8 and No. 15 on Monday, and senior Hunter Nichols eagled the par-five No. 8 and added two additional birdies to finish in 81st place after posting a 73 in the final round.  Sophomore Jake Reilly, who played as an individual, recorded a 78 with a birdie on No. 8, tying for 66th.

Seventh-ranked Auburn (-12) led the field with a tournament-record 13-under on Monday, winning the title by one stroke over No. 24 North Carolina (-11).  Liberty (-3) was third, followed by UCF (+5) in fourth, and Jacksonville (+6) in fifth place.  Furman (+25) finished in 13th place.

The Paladins will entertain 20 teams at the Furman Intercollegiate, which begins Friday at the Furman University Golf Course.
