Purvis Leads Paladins In First Day Of Bank Of Tennessee Intercollegiate

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- Sophomore Scott Purvis (-1) fired an opening round 71 to tie for 20th to lead the Furman men's golf team Friday at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the par 72, 7,147 yard Blackthorn Club at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.  

Purvis, who hails from Mason, Ohio, birdied No. 1 and No. 9 to make the turn at one-over then added three consecutive birdies from No. 14 through No. 16 to conclude the round at one-under.  Sophomore Matt Lehman (E) carded an even 72 with birdies on No. 1 and No. 8 to tie for 28th, and sophomore Keller Harper (+1) tied for 38th after shooting a 73 with four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on No. 14 and No. 15.

Junior Connor Bruns (+3) added a 75 on Friday with birdies on No. 10 and No. 17 to enter Saturday's second round tied for 54th, while senior Hunter Nichols (+4) eagled the par-5 No. 14 and added birdies on No. 4 and No. 12 to tie for 62nd with an opening round 76.

No. 48 Penn State (-11) leads the field after posting an opening round 277.  Just two strokes separate the next four teams.  Tennessee (-8) is second, and UNC Wilmington (-7) is just one stroke back in third.  Louisville (-6) and Coastal Carolina (-6) are tied for fourth.  Furman (+3) is tied for ninth place heading into Saturday's second round.  J.D. Hughes (-6) of Penn State leads the individuals after firing a 66 on Friday.

The 54-hole tournament will continue on Saturday, with teams teeing off of No. 1 beginning at 8:30 a.m..  The tournament will conclude on Sunday with teams going off of No. 1 and No. 10 starting at 8:30 a.m.  Admission is free and fans are welcome.  Results and live tournament scoring are available via www.FurmanPaladins.com and www.golfstat.com.
