AKRON, Ohio. -- Senior Hunter Nichols (+3) and sophomore Keller Harper (+3) tied for 16th to lead the Furman men's golf team to a sixth-place finish Tuesday in the final day of the Firestone Invitational at the par 72, 7,125 yard Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
Nichols, a native of Clinton, S.C., fired a final-round 69 to surge into 16th. Teeing off of No. 10, Nichols played a flawless back nine with three birdies to turn at three-under and added two more birdies on the front to finish the round tied with Harper, who also recorded five birdies, including three-straight birdies from No. 7 through No. 9 to end the round, carding a 73.
Sophomore Matt Lehman (+8) was under par with a 71 on Tuesday. Lehman notched birdies on No. 1, No. 6, and No. 13 to tie for 33rd, while junior Connor Bruns (+14) tied for 64th after adding a 76 with a birdie on No. 16 in the final day of play. Junior Garrison Hogan (+16) tallied a 76 with four birdies to tie for 69th.
Illinois State (-5) won the tournament by one stroke over Cincinnati (-4). Akron (+11) took third place, followed by USC Aiken (+19) in fourth, and Dayton (+20) in fifth. Furman (+23) moved up eight spots on the final day to finish in sixth place after shooting a 289, just two shots off of the tournament's low round for Tuesday.
"We got off to a tough start yesterday, but put together a complete team effort today to jump up the leader board," said Furman head coach Todd Satterfield after Tuesday's round. "Hopefully this will create some momentum for Chapel Hill and the rest of the fall."
The Paladins will compete at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, N.C., Oct. 7-8.
