CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. -- Senior Hunter Nichols (E) is tied for 21st to lead the Furman men's golf team following the opening day of the 2017-18 season at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par 72, 7,112 yard Cedar Rapids Country Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Nichols carded two birdies on the front to make the turn at an even 36 then scored a birdie on No. 18 to finish the round with even 72. N.C. State's Stephen Franken (-6) leads the field after firing a six-under 66 in the first round of the tournament.
Paladin junior Connor Bruns (+2) scored a birdie on No. 1 to finish the round with a two-under 74 and enters Monday's round tied for 39th. Sophomores Keller Harper (+5) and Scott Purvis (+5) are tied for 59th after each recorded an opening round 77. Harper birdied No. 15, while Purvis posted a team-high four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 11 and No. 12. Sophomore Jake Reilly (+8) is in 72nd place after carding a first-round 80.
North Carolina State (-14) leads the field, while Iowa (-5) is nine strokes back in second place. UNC Wilmington (-3) completes the top three. The Paladins (+12) enter Monday's round in 14th place.
Furman will tee off of No. 10 beginning at 10:15 a.m. CT on Monday in the second round of the 54-hole tournament and will play in a group with San Jose State and Louisiana Monroe.
