PINEHURST, N.C. – Junior Bryce Howell (-5) fired a final-round 70 to tie for second place and help the Furman men's golf team to a third-place finish Monday at the 2016 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,091 yard Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C.

In a tight multiple-team race to claim the championship, the Paladins (+15) briefly took the lead as ETSU, UNCG, Chattanooga, and Wofford all battled Furman for the title, with all but the Mocs claiming at least a share of the lead at some point during the final round.  ETSU (+12) emerged the champion by one stroke over UNCG (+13), with the Paladins just three strokes behind the winner.

Howell, a native of Blythewood, S.C., was one of several players who held the individual lead at one point during the final round.  He eagled the par-5 No. 8 and added birdies on No. 10 and No. 14 to finish the day tied with Wofford's Jeremy Grab (-5) for second, just one stroke behind 17th-ranked Adrian Meronk (-6) of ETSU, who posted a 72-69-69=210 to earn individual medalist honors.

Senior Wehman Hopke (+3), who earned a spot on the All-Southern Conference Team for the second-consecutive season, tied for seventh after birdieing No. 8 for a final-round 77, while rookie Garrison Hogan (+8) scored birdies on No. 13 and No. 15 to tie for 18th after carding a 75 on Tuesday.

Connor Bruns (+10), who represented the Paladins on the SoCon All-Freshman Team, eagled the par-5 No. 10 then added a birdie on No. 11 to tie for 20th with a final-round 75, and senior Preston Cole (+23), who also garnered All-Southern Conference accolades tied for 38th after posting birdies on No. 12 and No. 15 in the final round of action.
