Howell Remains In A Tie For Third At SoCon Championships

PINEHURST, N.C. – Junior Bryce Howell (-3) carded a 71 to remain in a tie for third place Monday following the second round of the 2016 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,091 yard Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C.  

Howell, a native of Blythewood, S.C., notched four birdies in the second round, including consecutive birdies on No. 14 and No. 15, concluding the day two strokes back of Wofford's Jeremy Grab (-5), who leads the individuals with a 68-71=139.

Senior Wehman Hopke (-2) paced the Paladins with a 70 on Monday and also added four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on No. 1 and No. 2 to open the round.  Hopke enters the final round tied for fifth.  Rookies Garrison Hogan (+5) and Connor Bruns (+7) each added a 76 with three birdies on Monday.  Hogan is tied for 15th, while Bruns enters Tuesday's play tied for 20th.  Senior Preston Cole (+19) is in 40th place after two rounds.

The Paladins (+7) shot a 293 on Monday to enter the final round in fourth place.  Wofford (E) leads ETSU (+1) by one stroke, while UNCG (+5) sits in third, just two strokes ahead of Furman.

The final round of the 54-hole tournament is slated for Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. with the Paladins scheduled to tee off of No. 1 to start the action.  The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regional, while the individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification.
