Hopke Ties for 12th, Paladins Sixth At Clemson Invitational

LAKE KEOWEE, S.C. -- Senior Wehman Hopke (+3) fired a final-round 71 to tie for 12th and lead the Furman men's golf team to a sixth-place finish Sunday at the Clemson Invitational at the par-72, 7,103-yard The Cliffs at Keowee Falls.   

The Paladins scored a final round 290, notching the low round of the day to pace the field.

Hopke, a native of Austin, Texas, led the Paladins with five birdies, including three-straight birdies on No. 10, No. 11, and No. 12, to finish 11 strokes back of individual medalist Vince Whaley of Georgia Tech, who scored a three-round 70-67-

Junior Bryce Howell (+5) tied for 17th after carding a 74 with birdies on No. 9 and No. 13 on Sunday, while senior Preston Cole (+10) scored four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 1 and No. 2, to place 31st after recording a 74 in the final round.

Freshman Garrison Hogan (+19) birdied No. 1 and No. 10, tying for 48th, and rookie Connor Bruns (+20), who tied Hopke with a team-best 71 on Sunday, tied for 52nd.  Bruns added four birdies, with back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and No. 3.

Eleventh-ranked Clemson (-11) won the team championship, defeating No. 47 Georgia Tech (+8) by 11 strokes.  Louisville (+9) was third, while Winthrop (+20) finished fourth.  No. 41 Michigan State (+23) completed the top five, and the Paladins (+24) placed sixth. 

The 12-team field included Furman, Boston College, #11 Clemson, Elon, #47 Georgia Tech, Louisville, #41 Michigan State, Notre Dame, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, and Winthrop.  

Furman will compete at the Southern Conference Championship in Pinehurst, N.C., April 24-26.
