LAKE KEOWEE, S.C. -- Junior Bryce Howell (+3) carded a 74 to tie for 16th to lead the Furman men's golf team Saturday in the second round of the Clemson Invitational at the par-72, 7,103-yard The Cliffs at Keowee Falls.
Howell, who hails from Blythewood, S.C., birdied No. 2 then added birdies on No. 10 and No. 16 to finish the round two over par, ten strokes behind Vince Whaley (-7) of Georgia Tech, who leads the individuals with a two-day total of 70-67=137.
Senior Wehman Hopke (+4) scored four birdies for a second-round 75 to tie for 22nd place, and senior Preston Cole (+8) and rookie Garrison Hogan (+8) are tied for 36th heading into Sunday's round. Cole also notched four birdies on Saturday, including back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and 11, to card a 76, while Hogan birdied every other hole from No. 12 through No. 16 to tally a 79 in round two. Freshman Connor Bruns (+21) birdied No. 10 and is in 64th place entering the final round.
Eleventh-ranked Clemson (-9) leads No. 47 Georgia Tech (-1) by nine strokes entering Sunday's final round. Louisville (+3) is third, followed by No. 41 Michigan State (+8) and Winthrop (+16) completes the top five. UNCW (+20) sits in sixth place, while Notre Dame (+21) is seventh, and the Paladins (+22) are eighth.
The 12-team men's field includes Furman, Boston College, #11 Clemson, Elon, #47 Georgia Tech, Louisville, #41 Michigan State, Notre Dame, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, and Winthrop.
The final round of the 54-hole tournament will conclude Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.golfstat.com.
