ATHENS, Ga. -- Junior Wehman Hopke (E) tied for 15th place to lead the Furman men's golf team to a fourth-place finish Monday at the Southern Intercollegiate at the par 72, 6,917 Athens Country Club in Athens, Ga.
Hopke, who paced the Paladins with four birdies, including three consecutive birdies on No. 5, 6, and 7, in the morning round, fired a first-round 71 then eagled the par-5 No. 10 for a 73 in the afternoon to finish the 36-hole tournament seven strokes back of individual medalist Nicolas Echavarria of Arkansas, who shot a 70 in the morning and added a 67 in the afternoon.
Senior Preston Cole (+2) scored an opening-round 74 after eagling No. 10 then recorded back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and 3 and added two additional birdies for an even 72 in the afternoon round, tying for 22nd. Junior Bryce Howell (+3) and freshman Garrison Hogan (+3) tied for 24th. Howell carded a 73 with three birdies in the morning and notched four birdies for a 74 in the afternoon round, while Hogan scored a 74 with two birdies in round one and a 73 with three birdies in round two. Rookie Connor Bruns (+9) made three birdies to card a 76 in the morning round and added a 77 with a birdie on No. 6 in the final round of play.
Second-ranked Georgia (-20) won the tournament by three strokes over 27th-ranked Arkansas (-17). Liberty (+3) was third, followed by the Paladins (+8). Kennesaw State (+14), USC Upstate (+14), and 36th-ranked Augusta (+14) tied for fifth.
Following an off weekend, the Paladins will compete at the Furman Intercollegiate March 25-27.
