AIKEN, S.C. -- Senior Preston Cole (-3) fired a career-best 66 in Monday's morning round and added a 71 in the afternoon to lead the Furman men's golf team in the opening day of the 19th-annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 70, 6,617 yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
Cole, who notched seven birdies in the morning round and added three additional birdies in the afternoon round to tie for fifth place, finished the first day of the tournament just three strokes back of leaders Matthew NeSmith (-6) and Will Miles (-6), both of South Carolina.
No. 22 South Carolina (-18) leads the field by 14 strokes after recording a two-round total of 542. Twenty sixth-ranked Virginia (-4) is second, while 35th-ranked Augusta (+12) sits in third place. Furman (+23) is in 11th place after two rounds.
Junior Bryce Howell (+7) carded a 72 in the morning round after tallying four birdies then added a 75 with three birdies in the afternoon. He enters Tuesday's final round tied for 38th, while freshman Garrison Hogan (+9) is tied for 56th after recording a 74 and 75 on Monday. Hogan birdied three out of four holes from No. 15 to 18 in round one, finishing the day with four birdies in each round.
Senior Wehman Hopke (+10) scored back-to-back birdies on No. 10 and 11 in the opening round and is tied for 64th after carding a 75 with three birdies in each round. Rookie Connor Bruns (+15) is in 84th place entering Tuesday's play.
The final round of the 54-hole tournament will begin with a shotgun start Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
